Maintaining Oral Hygiene During Invisalign® Treatment

By: Andrea Ball, D.M.D.

Invisalign® aligners are an easy, convenient way to straighten teeth without metal brackets and wires. However, proper oral hygiene is still important when undergoing Invisalign treatment. In this guide, Dr. Andrea Ball will review some tips and techniques for maintaining healthy teeth and gums while using clear aligners. Call Ball Dentistry in Indianapolis, IN to book your appointment today. Our patients love their newer, straighter smiles.

Know when to remove your aligners

Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 20 – 22 hours a day, but they should be removed during specific activities. These include eating(unless directed otherwise!), drinking anything other than water, and brushing and flossing your teeth. Removing your aligners during these times helps prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck between the aligners and your teeth, which leads to tooth decay and other dental issues.

Remember to store the invisible aligners in a clean case when not wearing them to avoid loss or damage. Keep the case with you at all times so you can take out your aligners whenever necessary.

Use proper brushing and flossing techniques

When you remove your aligners during Invisalign treatment in Indianapolis, IN, brush and floss before putting them back in place. Dr. Ball recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth. Flossing also removes plaque and food debris that lead to cavities or gum disease. Be sure to floss at least once a day, preferably right before bedtime.

Just like your teeth, the aligners also need to be cleaned every day. You can brush them gently or soak them in our special cleaning crystals for deep cleaning. There's no need to use harsh chemicals, as they may damage your clear aligners. Avoid using boiling water — hot temperatures can warp the plastic and alter their shape.

Watch what you eat and drink

Did you know that consuming sugary or acidic foods can cause damage to your teeth and the invisible aligners? Dark-colored beverages, such as coffee or tea, can also cause staining. If you do indulge in a sweet treat or drink something other than water, make sure to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly. This helps prevent discoloration or bacteria from thriving in your mouth.

Stay on schedule with appointments

At Ball Dentistry, we schedule Invisalign appointments at regular intervals to monitor your progress. These check-ups are vital to ensure that your teeth are moving as planned and to prevent any potential issues from arising. Missing appointments may even prolong your treatment time and impact the results. Dr. Ball and our team are dedicated to making your Invisalign treatment as efficient and successful as possible.
