Root Canals

With the advancement of medical technology, root canals are routine in saving teeth. Treatment involves clearing infection and decay from the tooth root. A filling is then placed before the canal is sealed. Procedure:

  1. The crown of the tooth is opened to allow access into the pulp chamber.
  2. Pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned.
  3. Medication is administered to the infected area.
  4. The root canals are filled.
  5. The crown opening receives a filling.

Causes of a Root Canal

The most common reason is that an untreated cavity continues to decay into the tooth’s root. This may or may not be painful, which is why we recommend regular dental check-ups and x-rays. Deep cavities can cause an abscess, where a pocket of pus forms at and around the end of a root.

Other causes include trauma and tooth fractures.

Apicoectomy (Root End Surgery)

Sometimes the infection persists even after root canal therapy. In these cases, an apicoectomy, or root end resection, can be performed to remove infected tissue.

  1. An incision is made to allow access to the base of the tooth. The inflamed or infected pulp is treated and the canals are carefully cleaned and shaped.
  2. A small filling may be placed in the remaining tip of the tooth to seal the root canal.
  3. The gum tissue is stitched back into place.

Post and Crown

Without your tooth’s natural pulp, it may be necessary to have a post placed along with the crown after root canal treatment. The post reinforces the filling support for your dental crown. I would highly recommend this dental practice! I am a 66 y/o woman and have always had problems with my teeth. When my numerous root canals finally failed, Dr. Craig Ball recommended Dr Michael Edwards to perform an “all on 4” implant surgery on my upper & snap in denture on my lower. Both those procedures went well. Dr Ball provided the “all on 4” denture & the “snap in” denture. I am very pleased with their appearance & function. Dr. Ball listened to what I wanted and used a picture from my younger years to replicate my original teeth. He even provided a dental lab specialist to come in for consults two times. His assistants Dani, Thomas & then Haley, we’re very professional & reassuring throughout the process. I noticed that wrinkles around my mouth became more prominent after these procedures, so I consulted with Dr Andrea Ball. She recommended the Opus Plasma procedure for my face . It has improved my skin a great deal. I use the Skin Medica Products which have helped maintain my improvements. Dr. Andrea did some Botox injections for me, which improved the area around my lips even more. I am planning on a lip filler next & that should complete my process. I think it is great that Dr Andrea provides these services at a dental office to not only improve the appearance of your teeth, but also your face. Again, I highly recommend this dental practice!

It had been five years since I could afford a dentist, when I walked through the doors of this place. Dr. Craig and assistant Jaylen took such good care of me. I wasn't judged, I genuinely felt like they cared! With the amount of cavities I had, I ended up visiting many times over the last 6 months, and made sure I got Dr. Craig and Jaylen every single time! I just wrapped up my last visit for a cap and crown yesterday, and they did excellent work! It was my first root canal and I didn't have a single fear or anything! I highly recommend these two, especially Jaylen. She is efficient, funny, kind, gets the job done, and also feels like your best friend while doing so! I can't wait to go back to see her and Dr. Craig for my cleaning!!! 10/10 recommend this place!!!!

About Us
Will I need a dental crown after having a root canal?

Root canals remove the pulp (or nerve center and blood supply) to a tooth, which can cause it to become brittle and more likely to break over time. As a result, a dental restoration must be placed. We often recommend placing a dental crown to protect a root canal-treated tooth, which offers full coverage and helps strengthen the tooth structure. During your consultation at Ball Dentistry, we can discuss the type of restoration ideal for meeting your oral health needs.

Is a root canal painful?

Contrary to common belief, root canal therapy is typically not painful. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, and most patients at Ball Dentistry experience little to no pain during the procedure. Post-treatment discomfort is usually minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Can a tooth that has had a root canal become infected again?

While root canals are highly successful, in rare cases, a tooth can become infected again. This may happen if the tooth's canals are not fully cleaned or sealed or if a new problem arises, such as a crack in the tooth.
